Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from her grandmother Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay quickly was captivated when she showed her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence for a specific member of the Jury. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Besides PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
